He is eating real food.
At his 4 month appointment the doctor said to me matter of fact, "He is ready for food. You should start him on cereal." and I, in my high pitched hesitant mom voice said.."uuuuhhhh don't we wait until 6 months for thaaaat?" and he said, "you can, but he's ready." and then he explained something about a study that was done that made people think that waiting until 6 months was beneficial but that when they did a bigger study they found that it really didn't matter, yada yada...
and in my head I said back to him, "NOT YET. HE WAS JUST A LITTLE BABY INFANT LIKE 2 SECONDS AGO. I AM NOT READY FOR THIIIIISSSSSS"
But in real life I just smiled at him with blank stare eyes.
So he probably knew what I was thinking.
Obviously, I just wanted my little baby to be my little baby for a wee bit longer. So after that 4 month appointment I let a month and a half go by and on a random Saturday morning finally decided we were ready.
I mixed up some rice cereal and breast milk, put a bib on him and put him in his fancy shmance high chair. I fed him while Drew Jones took photos.
He started out pretty happy to be in his seat, feeling like a big boy.
But as soon I started spooning the cereal into his mouth this happened...
He is begging me with his eyes to make it stop in that last photo.
I tried the cereal a few more times and it went this way every time. He ate maaaaybe a spoonful each feeding. Mostly he just grimaced and spit it out onto his bib and made worried baby eyes at me.
So I researched a bit and we decided to try banana's. Mushed up with some breast milk in them of course.
And he loved em. Ate those bananas up like a little champ.
I caught the tail end of it on camera.
Next up we try avocado!
Don't forget I am posting a Living Pinterest post tomorrow that you can link to!
so cute. parker is only getting boob until he's like seven.
ReplyDeletealso, love that bib and the striped pants. westley... so stylish.
We never fed rice cereal to Jack, I think his first food was sweet potato at Thanksgiving. I always hard that babies hate rice cereal, so I never tried it! We waited until he was almost 6 months, too, but he probably could have handled it earlier. He was constantly eyeballing us when we ate. Westley is such a cutie! They grow up so fast.
ReplyDeleteHe's begging you with his eyes to make it stop. I literally just laughed until tears came to my eyes.
ReplyDeleteNext up...loading the dishwasher! I love how Drew Jones sang "strong and groooowing" to him.
Goodness, Westley, you are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI like your fancy fancy highchair.
Really, I just like you. And your mama. And your daddy.
hooray! Go Westley. We skipped rice cereal all together. Just went straight to real people food mashed up a bit.
ReplyDeleteOh his little face! Spoon feeding liquid rice cereal is THE WORST. And I kind of hated starting solids in general because I could no longer walk around announcing, "I make him alive with only my breasts!"
ReplyDeleteI've got a Living Pinterest ready to go!
go westley!
ReplyDeleteand thank you erin for that amazing comment.

ReplyDeleteOh solid food, he's growing up! I've been reading a bit about the whole food thing (my neighbor gave her baby cereal at 3 months... 3 months!!! I am so not ready for that). I read a bit about baby lead eating, as in if they grab for your food you let them try it... yeah yeah i know there's that whole choking thing... so i am still looking into it. Mashed bananas sound way way better than rice cereal.
